Black Men Talk Male Grief After Child Loss

October is used to honor and remember those affected by miscarriage or stillbirth, SIDS, and pregnancy and infant loss, including recognizing Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on October 15th. Families impacted by pregnancy loss (i.e., miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, or SIDS death) face stigma, disenfranchised grief, and isolation. For instance, the emotional impact on grieving fathers is rarely discussed. Historically, their experiences with pregnancy loss have been left in the shadows.

A quarter of all pregnancies are miscarried, and 24,000 babies are born stillborn every year. In 2020 alone, the Centers for Disease Control reported 21,000 stillbirths in the United States.

However, despite these shocking figures, we still don’t talk about the particular kind of grief that comes with this loss and its devastating effects. The grief of men. Black men sit and talk with nursing professional "Tobi Tajomavwo" owner of "Ajoke Nursing Concierge."
